EP 08 — From FDs to F&O: Inside India’s Retail Trading Boom — with Dr. Ananya Iyer
India now has the world's largest retail derivatives market — and the regulator has warned that 9 out of 10 active F&O traders lose money. Dr. Ananya Iyer, behavioural finance researcher at IIM Bangalore, joins us to understand the boom.
The scale of the shift
Why it happens — the psychology
What the data says
The fix
Host: Dr. Iyer, thank you for joining. India's retail F&O boom — is it democratisation or a problem?
Dr. Ananya Iyer: It's both. Access is democratised — that's genuinely good. But the psychology of derivatives is fundamentally hostile to the average retail participant. The data is brutal: most active traders lose money, and they keep losing because the behaviour loop is reinforcing.
The tick chart is designed like a slot machine — variable rewards, near-misses, instant feedback. Your brain doesn't stand a chance without deliberate structure: fixed rules, position limits, and a very clear definition of what you're trying to achieve.
Host: What would you tell a young investor today?
Dr. Ananya Iyer: If you're new, start with boring — index funds, a long horizon, and a written plan. If you must trade, trade small, journal every decision, and measure your fees. The house edge in F&O isn't the exchange — it's your own impatience.
